A Warm Welcome
On August 17, 2025, Path to Russia NGO visited Bondeni Children Rescue Center in Athi River, Machakos County. We were warmly received by the center’s directors, Mr. and Mrs. Gitau, who guided us through the facility and shared the story of how Bondeni has become a lifeline for vulnerable children.

Originally founded in 2014 as a small feeding initiative, Bondeni has grown into a residential home serving seventy children and employing seven dedicated staff members. It provides shelter, education, and holistic care to orphans, children who have experienced abuse or neglect, and those whose families are unable to provide adequate support.
Education at the Core
Bondeni’s philosophy is clear: education is empowerment. The center not only ensures every child is enrolled in school but also covers tuition fees, learning materials, meals, and mentorship. Over 300 children have passed through the center since its founding, with two young beneficiaries set to join university and college this year—testament to its long-term impact.

To prevent cases of re-abandonment, the center combines academic support with daily care, offering complete packages of necessities that create stability and nurture confidence.
Challenges on the Ground
Despite its achievements, Bondeni faces pressing challenges that limit its ability to serve more children:
- Water Supply: The center struggles to pay monthly water bills after the loss of a key sponsor.
- Land Security: Operating on temporarily allocated land makes long-term development uncertain.
- Infrastructure: Dormitory roofs are leaking, exposing children to unsafe conditions.
- Funding Gaps: Delays in staff salaries, rising utility bills, and financial constraints hinder smooth operations.
These challenges underscore the urgent need for stronger partnerships and sustainable funding models.

Stories of Growth
For Mr. Gitau, what began as a modest feeding program in Bondeni slums in 2014 has evolved into one of the most respected rescue centers in Machakos County. Today, the center is not only a home but also a stepping stone for children to pursue education and careers.
To expand its reach, Bondeni has launched a digital transformation plan, including the creation of an official website to connect with sponsors and amplify fundraising efforts. This step marks a new chapter in the center’s journey toward sustainability.
The Voices of Leadership
During our visit, members of the leadership team shared candid insights:
- Mr. Boniface Abiri, Chairman of the Board, emphasized the importance of securing permanent land and building a long-term partnership with Path to Russia.
- Mrs. Kezziah Gitau, Co-Director, raised concerns about the mabati dormitories, which become unbearably hot during the day and cold at night.
- Mrs. Elizabeth Mwikali, Matron, highlighted urgent needs such as sanitary pads for girls, boxers for boys, and diapers for younger children.
Vision for the Future
Bondeni’s leadership has outlined a bold vision for development, including:
- Securing permanent land allocation
- Rehabilitating dormitories and building new child-friendly facilities
- Expanding digital outreach to attract more sponsors
- Improving sanitation and utility infrastructure
- Establishing reliable funding streams to ensure timely staff salaries
Conclusion
Our visit to Bondeni Children Rescue Center was a powerful reminder of the resilience and dedication that define grassroots child welfare initiatives. Despite ongoing financial and infrastructural challenges, the center continues to transform young lives through shelter, education, and care.
Path to Russia commends Bondeni’s holistic approach and looks forward to exploring avenues for partnership in areas such as infrastructure development, operational sustainability, and digital outreach. Together, we can amplify the impact of this vital institution and give more children the opportunity to thrive.
