Date of Visit: September 9, 2025
Location: Kangema Town, Murang’a County
Introduction
On September 9, 2025, Path to Russia visited Muguru Primary and Secondary School, an institution with deep roots in Murang’a’s educational history. Founded in 1948 by the Anglican Church of Kenya, Muguru has grown into a center of learning for over 1,295 students, supported by 30 dedicated teachers.

Our visit sought to understand the school’s strengths, highlight its challenges, and identify areas where collaboration could create lasting change.
Strengths That Inspire
Muguru stands out for its strong academic performance, with English emerging as the top subject. This not only reflects the teachers’ efforts but also the learners’ grasp of the language as a tool of global communication.
The school has embraced digital learning with a computer laboratory equipped with 10 computers and internet access—an invaluable step in equipping learners with 21st-century skills. Additionally, the County Government provides porridge to early learners in PP1 and PP2, improving nutrition, focus, and retention in the classroom.

Challenges Holding Learners Back
Despite these achievements, the school faces pressing challenges:
- Infrastructure: The sloped compound becomes dangerously muddy during rains, disrupting movement and learning.
- Security: Without proper fencing, the school remains vulnerable to intrusions.
- Learning Resources: The library lacks enough textbooks to match the high student population.
- Documentation: Around 100 learners lack birth certificates, complicating registration and progression.

Path to Russia’s Recommendations
From our assessment, we recommend:
- Constructing pavements and drainage systems to resolve the slope issue.
- Installing secure fencing to protect students and property.
- Supplying additional textbooks and library resources.
- Organizing a birth certificate registration drive with local authorities.

Conclusion
Muguru Primary and Secondary School reflects both the promise and the challenges of public education in Kenya. Its resilience is inspiring, and with the right support, it can continue to shape the future of Murang’a’s learners. Path to Russia looks forward to exploring ways to walk this journey together.
