Ngenyilel TVET Workshop: Building Technical Skills for a Changing Kenya

UASIN GISHU COUNTY, Kenya — September 18, 2025

Ngenyilel Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution has become a hub of opportunity for young people in the Rift Valley. Located along the border of Uasin Gishu and Nandi counties, the school hosted a workshop with Path to Russia (PTR), drawing attention to its achievements, challenges, and vast potential for growth.

A Legacy of Vision and Steady Growth

Founded in 1990 by the current President of Kenya, then serving as a Member of Parliament, Ngenyilel TVET became fully operational in 2017 with an inaugural class of just 14 students. Today, under the leadership of Mr. Erick Kibet Cheriot, it has expanded to an enrollment of 167 students, primarily between the ages of 18 and 21.

The institution offers eight accredited programs: Building Technology, Hairdressing, Beauty and Cosmetology, Fashion and Garment Making, Food and Beverage, Plumbing, ICT, and Automotive Engineering & Electrical Installation. Future plans include courses in agriculture, photography, graphic design, web design, artificial intelligence, and waste management — aligning the school with emerging market demands.

Strengths and Achievements

Ngenyilel TVET has established a reputation for academic rigor and extracurricular excellence. Its volleyball team has triumphed at East African competitions, underscoring the institution’s unique blend of academic and athletic talent. The school also benefits from reliable internet connectivity, sufficient water storage, and strong community support.

Persistent Challenges

Despite these strengths, Ngenyilel TVET faces significant challenges. The most pressing is the shortage of workshops, which limits hands-on training in technical subjects. Additionally, the dropout rate hovers around 50 percent, driven largely by school fee burdens. Although the government subsidizes half of the KES 30,000 annual fee, and bursaries are available through the Constituency Development Fund, many students still struggle to meet their share.

Unlocking Future Potential

The workshop highlighted clear pathways for the institution’s growth. Recommendations included:

  • Expanding the number of workshops to strengthen practical training.
  • Establishing income-generating projects to support needy students.
  • Partnering with industries and investors in areas like garment and clothing production.
  • Introducing modern courses in AI, digital design, and waste management.
  • Leveraging its five hectares of land for agriculture and value addition.

Conclusion

Ngenyilel TVET is poised to become a leading center of technical excellence in the Rift Valley. With targeted investments in infrastructure, industry partnerships, and student support, the school can bridge the gap between education and employment. The workshop reaffirmed that with the right backing, Ngenyilel TVET has the capacity to transform not only its learners but the wider community.
