Football Mums Community Tournament — Edition 2

What Happened

On 29 March 2026, Path to Russia and Kibera Girls Soccer Academy hosted the second Football Mums Community Tournament at DC Grounds in Kibera, Nairobi. Fifty-six participants — young women and mothers aged 18 to 30 — competed across five teams in a day of football, celebration, and community.

Young Mothers FC won the tournament, defeating Lucky Stars FC 10–4 in the final, and were crowned defending champions heading into the third edition.

Why It Matters

Football Mums was built on a straightforward conviction: young mothers from informal settlements deserve a platform — to compete, to be seen, and to lead. Many of the participants face daily pressures that leave little room for sport. This tournament gives them that room, and the community shows up to cheer them on.

"The primary aim is to nurture talent and passion among girls and women, especially those from underserved communities," said coordinator Eric Ochieng.

Co-founder Charity Mwongeli added: "We chose women because most are young mothers caring for their children alone."

Growing Momentum

The second edition drew broader participation and media attention than the first, confirming that the Football Mums model has genuine traction. Plans are already in place to expand the tournament to other slum communities across Nairobi and eventually nationwide.

The success of Edition 2 set the stage for the third edition at the same DC Grounds on 19 April 2026 — this time with Kibera Starlets emerging as champions.
